Michael's Blogs:   New York Yankees,   ,   MLB Playoffs 2010

I am a 27-year-old sports writer who spent three years (2005-2008) with Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM), writing for MLB.com. During that time, I grew to know all the various intricacies of both the majors and minors while developing contacts with dozens of players, coaches, scouts and management. Baseball is, without a shadow of a doubt, my greatest passion.

For four-and-a-half years, I studied at La Salle University in Philadelphia, earning my B.A. in Communication in January, 2005. While at 20th & Olney, I was the sports editor of the student newspaper, the Collegian, and helped revitalize the section. It was during that time when I interviewed my first professional athlete for a multi-part piece about sports rivalries, traveling all the way to Albany, N.Y. two days after the first of two shoulder surgeries to speak with Michael Strahan and the rest of the New York Giants about their rivalry with the Philadelphia Eagles in August, 2003.

I currently live in New Jersey, waiting/searching for my next break while preparing to become a police officer. My hobbies include fantasy baseball, weight lifting and exercise, photography, cooking and watching Blazing Saddles as many times as humanly possible.

The first month of the season has come and gone, and usually by now, people start to get an idea of a team's identity for that year. A team can emerge as an offensive machine as they batter opponents for seven or more runs every game, one whose pitch...

I know this is a Yankees blog, but I feel the circumstances allow for me to veer off course for a bit. As you may well have heard, Los Angeles Angels right-hander Nick Adenhart was killed early Thursday morning in California. He was 22 years old. ...

After Monday's lackluster 10-5 loss to the Orioles, I heard the word "bust" mentioned in the same sentence with free agent pick-ups CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira quite often. Yankee fans at local bars were acting like their team just fell out of play...

(Thanks for being patient with the column coming a day late. I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy what I have for you. - M.E.) For years, the standard mantra/cliche in the NFL was that "defense wins championships." With the recent success of the New York ...
